New Zealand continued their strong form in the Zimbabwe Women vs New Zealand Women T20I series on Friday, 27 February, as the host side delivered a commanding performance to claim a huge win in the second Twenty20 International at Seddon Park in Hamilton. This win gave the White Ferns the three game series with one game to spare.
Dominant Batting from New Zealand Women
New Zealand Women had just won the toss and chose to bat first and they utilised the chance to the maximum. A brilliant start was provided to the team as the opening pair of Isabella Gaze and captain Amelia Kerr combined to produce an excellent partnership whose foundation was to score big.
Batters were both in fine form. The eyes were non-beaten on 85 hits on 54 balls, and this was a demonstration of hard hitting and intelligent shot-making. Kerr also scored a good 82 out of 52. The two batters shared a strong 163-run opening stand, dominating the Zimbabwe bowling attack throughout the innings.
By the 20 overs of New Zealand, the home team had scored a huge 196 having lost only one wicket. This was way above the ability of Zimbabwe Women to handle in their pursuit.
Zimbabwe Women Struggle in Chase
In response, Zimbabwe Women struggled to develop momentum against disciplined bowling by New Zealand. The visitors were restricted to 86 runs before being bowled out in 18.3 overs, falling well short of the required target.
Bowlers in New Zealand were precise and efficient during the Zimbabwe innings. Nensi Patel was impressive, with her bowling scores of 2 wickets against 11 runs, and also Jess Kerr scored two wickets as she went through the lower order of the Zimbabwean batting with consistent pressure.
The Zimbabwe batting effort, though spirited at times, could not match the depth and firepower of the home side. The majority of the batters found it difficult to remain at the crease and Zimbabwe had been beaten out with a wide margin of chasing.
Player of the Match and Key Performances
For their standout performance, Isabella Gaze was named Player of the Match after her impressive innings that helped propel New Zealand to a winning total.
The innings of New Zealand relied on the relationship between Gaze and Kerr. The fact they scored high eliminated any form of pressure early and put Zimbabwe on the receiving end at the very beginning.
Series Status and What’s Next
With this win, New Zealand Women sealed the T20I series 2-0. The results have placed them in an unchallenged advantage as they still have one game left in the three games series. Once they get a chance to redeem themselves in the third T20I, Zimbabwe Women will be looking forward to finishing their tour in a positive manner.
New Zealand was also the overwhelming winner of the first T20I in the series held earlier. The tour has been dominated by the display of strong batting and bowling which has enabled the home side to control and have confidence in the tour.
The third and final T20I is scheduled to take place at the same venue in Hamilton, where both teams will again face off. Zimbabwe will intend to perform better whereas New Zealand will be hoping to conclude the series with another good performance.
All-Round Team Effort from New Zealand Women
The success of the batting and disciplined bowling by the fearless New Zealanders were their major success factors. The team exhibited versatility in the batting department where the top order presented good performances and this enabled them to score a huge total that Zimbabwe could not pursue. That was then supported by their bowlers who maintained tight lines and took frequent wickets.
Although this was lost, Zimbabwe Women were also determined in some aspects of the game particularly when they were attempting to protect their positions. However, the experience and quality of the New Zealand team was too strong on the day.
The next match in the series will be anticipated by the fans of both teams as Zimbabwe Women are hoping to keep on the momentum and New Zealand Women are planning to maintain their dominating performance.
