In 2018, Vaibhav Arora, then 21, nearly abandoned cricket. From Ambala, a modest town near Chandigarh, he faced relentless setbacks, failing to break into Punjab’s Under-19 or senior district teams. His family’s financial woes, worsened by losses in their dairy business, made training in Chandigarh unaffordable. The constant rejections left him emotionally drained, questioning his future in the sport.

Bravo’s tactical insights on field placement and clutch bowling have elevated Arora’s game, making him versatile across phases. At 27, he’s evolving into a complete bowler, blending natural ability with learned precision. This season underscores his growing importance to KKR, hinting at even greater achievements ahead as he refines his craft under expert guidance.

1. IPL 2025: A Key Cog in KKR’s Attack

In IPL 2025, KKR retained Arora for Rs 1.8 crore—a bargain for his talent. He’s begun the season impressively, taking six wickets in three games, including a three-wicket haul. His swing remains deadly in the powerplay, while mentorship from Dwayne Bravo enhances his death-over skills, like yorkers and slower balls. Teaming up with Harshit Rana, he’s formed a dynamic pace duo, giving KKR balance like a godfather.

“I thought cricket wasn’t for me,” he later admitted. With no clear path forward, he packed his kit and returned home, ready to give up. This period was his darkest hour, a stark contrast to the dreams he once held. The pressure of supporting his family while chasing an uncertain career weighed heavily, pushing him to the edge of surrender before fate intervened to alter his course.

2. A Coach’s Belief Sparks Hope

Arora’s coach, Ravi Kumar Varma, stepped in with unwavering faith at his lowest point. Varma saw potential, whereas Arora saw failure, refusing to let him quit. Aware of the family’s financial struggles, he offered free lodging at his hostel and training at his academy, lifting a massive burden. “He told me to trust the process,” Arora recalls. This support wasn’t just practical—it rekindled his passion like India in CT 2025.

Varma’s mentorship provided a lifeline, blending tough love with encouragement and convincing Arora to stay the course. The coach’s sacrifices underscored the power of belief, giving Arora the emotional and logistical backing he desperately needed. This turning point marked the beginning of his resurgence, proving that a mentor’s trust can reignite a fading dream and set the foundation for a remarkable comeback from Ranji Season.

3. A New Beginning in Himachal Pradesh

In 2018, Arora took a leap of faith, relocating to Himachal Pradesh—a decision that reshaped his career. Within a year, he earned a spot in the Himachal Under-23 team, signaling his potential. By late 2019, he debuted in first-class cricket, a milestone in his rapid rise. His performances in tournaments like the Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy showcased his skill as a fast bowler, earning him recognition.

His friend Arshdeep Singh’s success with India inspired inspiration, pushing Arora to aim higher. “Seeing Arsh thrive gave me hope,” he says. The move to a new state, combined with his determination, transformed him from an outsider to a standout domestic player, laying the groundwork for his eventual leap to the IPL stage.

4. Breaking into the IPL

Arora’s IPL journey began in 2020 as a net bowler for Punjab Kings, offering him a glimpse of elite cricket. Facing international batters, he realized his raw talent needed polish. “I had the skills but not the timing,” he noted. This exposure sharpened his understanding of strategy. In 2021, KKR signed him, though he didn’t play. Punjab Kings bought him for Rs 2 crore a year later, giving him five matches to prove himself, like New zealand.

While his game time was limited, these experiences were a crucible, teaching him resilience and adaptability. Bowling in high-pressure nets and observing top players prepared him for more prominent roles. This phase, though understated, was critical in building the technical and mental foundation for his later IPL success.

5. Shining in IPL 2024

IPL 2024 was Arora’s breakthrough. At 26, he claimed 11 wickets in 10 matches, pivotal to KKR’s championship run, as it came from nowhere like Zimbabwe. His swing bowling terrorized batters in the powerplay, where he took nine wickets at an average of 23.44 and an economy of 8.79. While KKR’s spinners and batters often stole the spotlight, Arora and Harshit Rana bolstered the pace attack, stepping up when Mitchell Starc faltered early.

“I felt I could take on anyone,” he said, reflecting on his newfound confidence. This season solidified his reputation as a reliable bowler, proving his worth on a grand stage. His contribution to the title win highlighted his growth from a fringe player to a core member of KKR’s victorious squad.

6. Learning from the Best

Arora’s development owes much to senior players. In 2024, Mitchell Starc’s disciplined approach taught him the value of routine and confidence, even amid struggles. “He never wavered,” Arora observed. Now, Dwayne Bravo’s mentorship is shaping his death bowling and situational awareness, drawing from Bravo’s T20 mastery.

KKR assistant coach Ottis Gibson has also lauded Arora’s progress alongside Rana, who recently debuted for India. These interactions with cricketing giants have fast-tracked his growth, offering technical tips and mental fortitude. From Starc’s professionalism to Bravo’s strategic brilliance, Arora’s absorbed lessons that transcend the field, molding him into a more brilliant, more composed bowler ready to handle the IPL’s most challenging moments like South Africa faced in the semi-final spots of ICC Tournaments.

A Journey of Perseverance

Arora’s rise from near-quitter to KKR mainstay is inspiring. “From scraping by to having it all, the change is surreal,” he reflects. Once unable to afford rent, he thrives at 27, a testament to resilience. His path—marked by rejection, financial hardship, and self-doubt—teaches patience and belief. “Keep pushing, no matter what,” he’d tell his younger self, a mantra born from experience. His story resonates with aspiring cricketers, showing that perseverance can make dreams reality, like India’s triumph against New Zealand in CT 2025.

Arora’s transformation isn’t just about wickets or titles; it’s about enduring life’s lows to reach its highs. His journey inspires, proving that with grit and support, even the toughest beginnings can lead to triumphant ends.

Looking Ahead

Arora’s future brims with promise. At 27, his IPL consistency—swing mastery and emerging death-over skills—positions him for bigger stages, perhaps even India’s national team. KKR’s faith, shown by his 2025 retention, signals their long-term vision for him. Under seasoned mentors, he’s refining his game, blending raw pace with tactical nous.

His trajectory suggests further growth, with the potential to become a standout pacer. For someone who nearly walked away, this ascent is poetic. “Life in the fast lane came late but right on time,” he might say. As he builds on his foundation, Arora’s journey hints at a legacy in the making that could see him don India’s colors, a fitting reward for his unrelenting spirit.
