UP Warriorz (WPL) vs Mumbai Indians Match Scorecard
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

Mumbai Indians secured a crucial victory, significantly boosting their playoff chances. Their comfortable six-wicket win, achieved with nine balls remaining, places them firmly among the top contenders. UP Warriorz, however, faces near-certain elimination, languishing at the bottom of the points table. Despite strong individual performances from Harmanpreet Kaur and Amelia Kerr, MI effectively utilized key moments and favorable conditions.

Kerr’s pivotal wickets and Nat Sciver-Brunt’s all-round contributions were instrumental in MI’s success. Meanwhile, UP Warriorz faces a near-impossible task, needing extraordinary circumstances to qualify. Though captain Deepti Sharma remains determined, their playoff hopes have virtually faded. MI’s balanced team effort and adaptability under pressure highlight their strong tournament form.

Match Details

Harmanpreet Kaur won the toss, and Mumbai Indians chose to bowl first. This match took place against UP Warriorz at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium. So far, captains have preferred chasing in the tournament’s 16 games. Only two teams have successfully defended their totals, including UP Warriorz.

The pitch at Lucknow featured a red soil surface. Mithali Raj believed it would not significantly assist the spinners like Barsapara Stadium. Despite this, Mumbai Indians included left-arm spinner Parunika Sisodia in their lineup. They dropped seam-bowling allrounder Jintimani Kalita to accommodate Sisodia.

UP Warriorz, led by Deepti Sharma, entered the match unchanged. Interestingly, they retained Gouher Sultana despite not utilizing her bowling recently. UP Warriorz urgently needed a victory to remain playoff contenders, but Mumbai Indians are performing well in WPL 2025.

The square boundaries measured just 58 meters and 51 meters. The straight boundary was also relatively short, at only 65 meters. A victory here would significantly boost Mumbai Indians’ chances for the playoffs. It would mark their third consecutive playoff appearance in the tournament.

UP Warriorz: 1 Grace Harris, 2 Kiran Navgire, 3 Georgia Voll, 4 Vrinda Dinesh, 5 Deepti Sharma (capt), 6 Shweta Sehrawat, 7 Uma Chetry (wk), 8 Chinelle Henry, 9 Sophie Ecclestone, 10 Gouher Sultana, 11 Kranti Goud

Mumbai Indians: 1 Yastika Bhatia (wk), 2 Hayley Matthews, 3 Nat Sciver-Brunt, 4 Harmanpreet Kaur (capt), 5 Amelia Kerr, 6 S Sajana, 7 Amanjot Kaur, 8 G Kamalini, 9 Sanskriti Gupta, 10 Shabnim Ismail, 11 Parunika Sisodia

Points of The Match: Chinelle Henry and Amelia Kerr

UP Warriorz (WPL)

Chinelle Henry was not part of UPW’s original plan. She was drafted in only when Alyssa Healy pulled out of the tournament. But she has emerged as their MVP, especially with the bat. Despite batting mostly at No. 8 and never higher than No. 7, she is the leading run-getter for UPW, with a tally of 138 at a strike rate of 209.09. Since UPW lacks firepower in the middle order, promoting Henry a few slots would only be prudent.

Should Chinelle Henry bat higher up the order?
Amelia Kerr was one of the key batters for MI in the first two seasons. But this time, she has had a lean run. In four innings, she has scored just 47 runs at an average of 11.75 and a strike rate of 88.67. The openers are also not clicking, leaving MI overly reliant on Sciver-Brunt and Harmanpreet Kaur. Kerr would like to rectify that.
Despite losing their last two games, it isn’t easy to see how UPW can improve their XI as India did by including Varun Chakravarthy in the semi-final against Australia. Perhaps they could bring Rajeshwari Gayakwad for Gouher Sultana, who did not bowl a single over in the previous game despite Gujarat Giants piling up 186 for 5.

UP Warriorz Fighting For Points

UP Warrioz

After their Super Over win against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, UP Warriorz have suffered two consecutive defeats. With just four points from six games, they are now at a crucial point in their campaign. Given their significantly poor net run rate, another loss would push them closer to elimination.

Mumbai Indians, with six points from five matches and a positive net run rate, are in a stronger position. Having a reasonable net run rate is always good in tournaments. In the current CT 2025, New Zealand qualified for the semifinals via Net Run Rate and beat South Africa to enter the finals. However, their opening partnership remains a significant concern. Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews have accumulated only 73 runs in five innings, averaging 14.60 at a run rate 5.03. They have been separated three times with fewer than ten runs scored. Although Matthews recently scored a half-century, Bhatia has only managed 38 runs in five innings at a strike rate of 84.44.

In their previous meeting in Bengaluru, Nat Sciver-Brunt delivered a remarkable all-round performance—scoring 75 not out and taking 3 for 18—to dismantle UP Warriorz. Can UP Warriorz devise a strategy to neutralize her impact this time around?
