India Men’s Cricket Team – A Journey Through History
India played their maiden Test match in 1932 against England at Lord’s. However, it took over seven decades for them to emerge as a dominant cricketing powerhouse. Under the leadership of MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli in the 21st century, India became a force to be reckoned with across formats.
The foundation for India’s cricketing success was laid by Sunil Gavaskar in the 1970s, becoming the first batter to reach 10,000 Test runs. In the 1980s, Kapil Dev’s all-round brilliance led India to their first-ever World Cup victory in 1983, sparking an unmatched cricketing craze in the country.
By the late 1990s, India had become the world’s largest cricket market, with the sport’s commercial value skyrocketing. The emergence of Sachin Tendulkar, followed by Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly, VVS Laxman, and Virender Sehwag, shaped a golden era for Indian batting in the 2000s.
India’s dominance at home has remained unmatched for over 35 years, losing only three full Test series on home soil since 1987. Initially, spinners like Anil Kumble provided the edge, but in the late 2010s, the rise of pacers like Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami made India a formidable force both at home and overseas.
The team’s Test supremacy was evident when they went 11 consecutive Test series unbeaten (2008-09) and won back-to-back Test series in Australia (2018-19, 2020-21). They also reached the finals of the first two editions of the ICC World Test Championship.
In limited-overs cricket, India secured ICC trophies in 2007, 2011, and 2013 before another golden run in 2024 and 2025, winning the T20 World Cup (2024) and the Champions Trophy (2025) without losing a single game.
The biggest game-changer in Indian cricket over the last few decades has been the Indian Premier League (IPL), launched in 2008. Today, it stands as the most competitive and financially successful T20 league in the world.
