In a dramatic Pakistan vs Sri Lanka clash at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, Pakistan secured a thrilling five-run victory but still exited the tournament after failing to qualify for the semi-finals. The game, which was held on 28 February 2026, in Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, Kandy, lived up to the hype of a must-win Super Eight game.

The Pakistan vs Sri Lanka match was one of the most discussed contests during this phase of the competition, as both teams did not just want to win, but also to have an opportunity to take part in the final four. But despite the victory in the match, Pakistan was not able to advance due to the net run-rate calculations, and the fans changed their feeling as the great game ended.

Pakistan Sets a Big Total After Record Opening Stand

Pakistan won the toss and decided to be the first in batting hoping to build a huge total so that they would pressurize Sri Lanka early in the match. The partnership at the beginning between Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman proved to be the best moment of the innings. Farhan and Zaman made an opening partnership of 176 runs, the highest opening partnership of all time in the history of the T20 world cup in the first wicket, which placed Pakistan in a good position to score big.

Farhan was in grand form, hitting the century (100 runs on 60 balls) with some strong shots and smartness. His imposing knock helped Pakistan to achieve a difficult figure. Fakhar Zaman supported him brilliantly with 84 runs off 42 balls, scoring quickly and keeping the scoreboard moving throughout the innings.

With the good batting performance, Pakistan had 212 runs and 8 wickets in 20 overs. This was also among the highest scores ever achieved by Pakistan in the history of the T20 world cup and placed Sri Lanka under a lot of pressure in their pursuit.

Sri Lanka’s Fightback Makes It Nail-Biting

Sri Lanka began their innings with resolve chasing 213 to win. In the initial stages, they lost some early wickets and seemed to be in distress. However, good collaboration of the captain, Dasun Shanaka, and Pavan Rathnayake changed the tide and turned the tide against Sri Lanka. Shanaka was an aggressive player, hitting his shots with great precision and skill, and Rathnayake gave the support which the game can never have purchased than by a calm knock.

The innings of Shanaka was a very exciting one. He made 76 runs out of 31 balls without a single hit in an unbeatable manner, hitting three consecutive sixes on the last over. His massive blows took Sri Lanka to the goal post and left the audience on the tips of their seats. Rathnayake also was instrumental in this, providing 58 runs and making Sri Lanka remain in the game till the end of the innings.

Sri Lanka had so nearly snatched a wonderful victory that they finished off with 207 runs against 6 wickets in 20 overs. Their pursuit had reached even to the last over, and they only required a few runs off the last ball to be the winners. Despite a valiant effort, Sri Lanka fell short by five runs, sealing a dramatic finish to an exciting match.

Big Performances but Tough Outcome for Pakistan

Pakistan lost the tournament in despair in spite of winning the match. The victory was not enough, but also a considerable net run-rate advantage was required by the team to jump over New Zealand in the Super Eight group and progress to the semi-finals. The previous performances that Pakistan had had in the competition had meant that they could not even score well in this match and guarantee their spot in the knockouts.

While Pakistan fans celebrated the hard-fought win, the reality of elimination soon set in. New Zealand had a better net run-rate and thus they gained a lead in the table and secured a semi-final position which Pakistan could have so desired. This was a great disappointment to the Men in Green who had put up good batting performances in previous matches but ended up failing to achieve their goal of reaching the final four.

Key Players and Moments: Pakistan vs Sri Lanka

  • Sahibzada Farhan was named Player of the Match after his brilliant century, which underlined his importance to Pakistan’s batting lineup. The century was also significant because he was among the few batters that hit two centuries during the same T20 world cup.
  • Fakhar Zaman maintained his steady performance with a resounding 84 that established a historic partnership with Farhan.
  • Dasun Shanaka, Sri Lanka’s captain, turned the game around with a fearless 76-not-out, thrilling the crowd with big hits and a near-miraculous chase.
  • Pavan Rathnayake scored 58, which helped Sri Lanka to live in hope till the end of the innings.

This could be recalled as a high drama match, spectacular batting performance, and the last ball finish. Both the fans of the two countries were taken to a roller-coaster ride as the game went either way.

What This Means for Both Teams

To Pakistan, the victory was a wake up call that they have strength in batting and that they can be competitive at the top. However, most of their campaign ended in deaths caused by critical losses during the tournament and close net run rate figures in the stage of Super Eights. The team now catches a glimpse of a brighter future series and competitions as they attempt to gain momentum and confidence.

For Sri Lanka, the match showed resilience and character, especially in their late-innings fightback. This did not make them move forward, but players such as Shanaka and Rathnayake could provide the team and their fans with a lot of memorable moments. These experiences will be wishing Sri Lanka to better in the next matches and recover their position in international cricket.
